Refrigerant classification and the R- number.
With more study we learn that refrigerants have three classes. They are divided according to absorption and the heat extraction.
- Class 1: here we have the refrigerants which cool to change their phase this by boiling.
- Class 2: refrigerants which cool by the temperature change. We have the calcium, air, chloride brine and alcohol. This type of gases are sensible to heat they get reduction of temperatures from the first class and will automatically change the air to cool the refrigerator.

What is R- numbering? It is a way to identify the molecular structure of a refrigerant. Whether made of a single halogenated hydrocarbon. Taking an example

- R-134 means 2 carbon atoms, 2 hydrogen and 4 fluorine= tetrafluoroethane.

This the common and most popular refrigerant for the domestic refrigerators. It has been in use and was the first to phase out other gases. However with more research the gas might be eliminated due to global warming. Remember refrigerant which will not harm the environment and human at large. We can’t really conclude that R-134A is harmful but with recent test it has high energy consumption and also a lot of vapors due to evaporation.
Call it CARE®40 and very popular for refrigeration and also the air conditioners. Though very new in the market scientist really recommend people to use the refrigerant. Yes new but has no harmful effects to the environment. Actually the gas is non-toxic doesn’t harm the ozone layer which we advocate it shouldn’t be tempered with. The gas is low on global warming. I bet it now clicking between the R-134 and R-290. The tricky part is this the refrigerant if flammable and will not work well with the fluorocarbon refrigerant. It best for commercial use, industrial and domestic use. It highly recommended for it pureness and will work well. Basically this gases have their negative and positive side all we can look at is the less harmful refrigerant. Flammability is considered for all gases but if we take good care we will have less cases of explosion.
Recognized as CARE®10 isobutene. This is also new to the market and still not given a consideration as n for refrigeration but has good qualities which might attract you. It has low global warming effect and also no effects on the ozone layer. R-600 has a lot of uses from domestic to industrial and commercial uses. Again the gas is flammable but safe for refrigerant use. Let’s say R-600 is becoming popular among so many countries. They have realized how cheap and safe the refrigerant is. The freezers and refrigerator manufactures are taking the new refrigerant for their appliance. It more marketable and benign to the environment as whole. It also a good replacement for the R12 and has lower molecular weight than the R-134. R-600 goes to have a lot of advantage making the R-134 less valuable. It has low pressure thus extending the life span of the refrigerator compressor.
In conclusion I feel the R600 has the top hand here with R 290 following and deeply feeling they should phase out the R-134. They have a lot of advantages environmental wise and health wise compare to the R134A which has different cases of explosions and global warming. Change for the better is nice and sometime difficult but with time we can eliminate the R134 and manufacture or buy refrigerator which make more comfortable.
